R2S supports decommissioning for oil major

Challenge

An international oil major operating off the coast of Nova Scotia faced escalating costs and operational inefficiencies during decommissioning. Frequent helicopter trips—especially to unmanned, ageing assets—were not only expensive but also constrained by limited POB (Persons on Board) capacity and seasonal weather disruptions. With multiple contractors bidding for access and increasing pressure on aviation resources, the operator needed a smarter, safer way to manage site access and planning.

Solution and results

AIS deployed R2S across all regional assets, capturing high-fidelity visual data and building a digital twin environment accessible from anywhere. Once the platform was live, we delivered hands-on training to ensure teams could immediately integrate R2S into their workflows.

Impact

  • Reduced site visits: Contractors and internal teams could remotely inspect assets, cutting helicopter trips and associated risks.
  • Streamlined bidding: R2S became the shared platform for decommissioning tenders, improving bid accuracy and reducing review time.
  • Improved regulatory engagement: Visual data helped satisfy regulator queries faster and more effectively.
  • Lowered risk and cost: With fewer physical interventions required, the operator saw a measurable reduction in operational risk and planning overhead.

R2S enabled the operator to move from reactive logistics to proactive planning—saving time, money, and lives in one of the world’s most challenging offshore environments.
